The Kränzle wine tank warmer brings the contents of a tank up to a set temperature before the next stage of production, without disturbing the wine. It is manufactured locally in stainless steel by Kränzle South Africa for Western Cape cellars.

It connects to the tank jackets or cooling plates and uses a low-pressure centrifugal pump to circulate glycol or water, warmed to the set temperature, through them. The heat reaches the wine through the tank wall, so the wine itself is never pumped or handled and warms gradually.

Cellars have traditionally warmed a tank by isolating it from the cooling system and leaving it to the ambient cellar temperature, which is slow and imprecise. The tank warmer does the same job actively, to a set temperature. It is used to:

  • Start malolactic fermentation by bringing the wine to a suitable temperature.
  • Prepare for bottling by bringing the wine to the correct bottling temperature.
  • Heat any jacketed tank or heat exchanger plate system that runs on glycol or water.

Choosing a tank warmer

The 18 kW is the standard unit, drawing 32 A, and the 24 kW draws 44 A; both run on 400 V with no neutral needed, and 36 kW and 48 kW models are available on request. Each has a stainless steel body, a low-pressure centrifugal pump, a control panel with one controller and Geka fittings, with NW or Camlock fittings possible. An additional controller for the temperature of the tank contents is available as an option. The hose or piping to the tank jackets is not included.

Frequently asked questions

How does a tank warmer heat wine without disturbing it?

The tank warmer never touches the wine. It circulates glycol or water, warmed to the set temperature, through the tank jackets or cooling plates, and the heat passes through the tank wall so the contents warm gradually without being disturbed.

What is a wine tank warmer used for?

Mainly to bring a tank up to a suitable temperature for malolactic fermentation, or to the correct temperature for bottling. It suits any heat exchanger or jacketed tank that runs on glycol or water.

Which tank warmer size is right, and what supply does it need?

The 18 kW is the standard unit and draws 32 A on a 4 or 5-pin 32 A plug. The 24 kW draws 44 A on a 4 or 5-pin 63 A plug. Both run on 400 V and neither needs a neutral. 36 kW and 48 kW models are available on request.

What fittings does it use, and is the hose included?

It is fitted with Geka fittings as standard, and NW or Camlock fittings are also possible. The connection hose or piping to the tank jackets is not included.

Can the tank warmer control the temperature of the wine itself?

The standard unit has a control panel with one controller. An additional controller for the temperature of the tank contents is available as an option.

Is the tank warmer only for wine?

No. In cheese making it keeps milk at temperature during fermentation, and once the curd is cut the heating helps separate the whey from the curd.
