The Kränzle wine barrel cleaner is built locally by Kränzle South Africa for Western Cape cellars. It was developed with the help of experienced winemakers so that one person can run it, and it gets the inside of the barrel very clean without damaging the wood.

The barrel sits bung-down on the frame while a geared cleaning head, driven by a 24 V DC motor, carries the high pressure water around the inside. Cleaning works best with alternating hot and cold water cycles; a normal cycle takes 3 to 4 minutes and uses about 45 litres of water. The head is driven by a low-voltage 24 V DC motor for operator safety, and takes a 230 V mains supply through its own transformer and electrical box.

The barrel cleaner connects to any high pressure cleaner with an M22 hose fitting and was developed to work with the Kränzle Electra, Therm and Quadro ranges. Most cellars pair it with the electrically heated Kränzle Electra, which is described on the Wine Barrel and Cellar Cleaning page.

Choosing a barrel cleaner

  • For 225 and 300 L barrels: the Barrel Cleaner S/S complete with frame, the standard single-barrel unit.
  • For 500 and 600 L barrels: the Barrel Cleaner on frame, built to the larger barrel and puncheon sizes.
  • For barrels on the cradle: the bent barrel cleaner, which cleans the barrel without lifting it off the cradle.
  • For an existing frame: the straight head with electrics, a replacement head supplied with its transformer and electrical box.
  • For high barrel volumes: the Double Barrel Cleaning System, quoted to the cellar.

With a Kränzle Electra, the barrel cleaning timing option switches the pump and heating elements on and off through a preset hot and cold cycle from a key switch, with no operator involvement, and a wireless remote can start it from the barrel line.

Every barrel cleaner uses a geared head driven by a 24 V DC motor from a 230 V supply and connects to any high pressure cleaner with an M22 hose fitting. Also available to order: the barrel cleaning timing option (000127) and its wireless remote (00266) for the Kränzle Electra.

Double Barrel Cleaning System

The Double Barrel Cleaning System is built for cellars with a high barrel volume. Each of its two bays cleans two barrels mounted on one cradle, and while one bay is cleaning, the forklift operator unloads and reloads the cradle in the other. It is normally supplied with two Kränzle Electra 48 kW hot water high pressure cleaners, an operator control panel, adjustable wash-period timers, pneumatic lifting of the cradles, and rollers that turn the barrels without marking or damaging them. The largest system in a South African cellar cleans up to 24,000 barrels a year. It is quoted to each cellar.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to clean a wine barrel?

A normal cycle takes 3 to 4 minutes and uses about 45 litres of water. Cleaning is most effective with alternating hot and cold water cycles, which is why the barrel cleaner is usually run off a hot water machine such as the Kränzle Electra.

Which barrel sizes can the Kränzle barrel cleaner take?

The Barrel Cleaner S/S complete with frame takes standard 225 and 300 L barrels. A larger frame takes 500 and 600 L barrels. The bent barrel cleaner cleans the barrel while it stays on its cradle.

Can barrels be cleaned without taking them off the cradle?

Yes. The bent barrel cleaner uses the same geared 24 V DC head as the frame-mounted model but cleans the barrel on the cradle. For higher volumes, the Double Barrel Cleaning System cleans two barrels on one cradle in each of its two bays, with pneumatic lifting of the cradles.

Can the hot and cold cleaning cycle be automated?

Yes, with a Kränzle Electra. The barrel cleaning timing option puts a timer in the machine cabinet with a remote key switch, which switches the pump and heating elements on and off through a preset cycle with no operator involvement. A wireless remote can start the timing from the barrel line, with its receiver installed about 20 to 30 m from where the barrels are cleaned.

Why does the cleaning head run on 24 V?

The low-voltage motor is an operator safety feature. The cleaning head is driven by a 24 V DC motor, and the 230 V mains supply is stepped down through its own transformer and electrical box.

What high pressure cleaner does the barrel cleaner need?

Any high pressure cleaner with an M22 hose fitting. The barrel cleaner was developed to work with the Kränzle Electra, Therm and Quadro ranges, and a hot water machine gives the alternating hot and cold cycles that clean a barrel best.
